A tattoo you got on day two of a two-week trip to Colombia has a hard road ahead. Cartagena’s sun, Tayrona’s sea, the rivers around San Gil and the hot springs of the coffee region are all on the list of things your new tattoo should avoid.
The fix costs nothing. Put the tattoo at the end.
What the medical sources say
The major medical sources agree on the direction, though their timelines differ:
- Mayo Clinic says most tattoos take about two weeks to heal. It advises keeping the area out of the sun and staying out of pools, hot tubs, rivers, lakes and other bodies of water while it heals.
- Cleveland Clinic says the top layer typically heals by about two months, with deeper layers taking several months more. Until fully healed, it advises against immersing the area, wearing tight clothing, or applying sunscreen to it.
- Familiprix, a Canadian pharmacy chain, says it is better to wait until you get back from a sunny trip, and advises avoiding direct sun for three months.
Those differences partly reflect size and location. Larger tattoos can take a few months to heal. Follow your artist’s instructions, and when in doubt, take the more cautious timeline.

The last-stop rule
Here is the rule in one line: finish the water, sun and sweat first, and get tattooed in your final city.
For most routes, that means ending in a highland city. Medellín and Bogotá have no beach to tempt you, and they are the country’s two busiest international airports for foreigners.
Three routes that work
10 days: Caribbean, then Medellín
- Days 1 to 5: Cartagena and the islands. Swim all you want.
- Days 6 to 7: Fly to Medellín. Explore, and meet your artist for a final design check.
- Day 8: Tattoo session.
- Days 9 to 10: Easy city days, a possible studio check-in, then fly home.
14 days: North coast, coffee region, Bogotá
- Days 1 to 6: Santa Marta, Tayrona, and Minca.
- Days 7 to 10: Coffee region, including any hot springs.
- Days 11 to 12: Bogotá and a design check.
- Day 13: Tattoo session.
- Day 14: Rest, then fly home.
Large project: several sessions in one city
If you are planning a sleeve or back piece, the tattoo is the trip. Stay in one city, ask your artist how many sessions the design needs and how far apart they should be, then plan beach time for another visit. Get the schedule in the written quote.
What about the flight home?
We looked for guidance on flying with a fresh tattoo in the medical sources above and did not find any specific rule, so we will not invent one. Practical steps are simple: leave at least one day between session and flight so you can reach the studio with any early concerns, ask your artist how to dress the tattoo for travel, wear loose clothing, and pack your aftercare supplies in reach.
What if you can’t put it last?
Sometimes the artist’s only opening is mid-trip. If so, change the trip, not the aftercare. Skip swimming, cover up with loose clothing, and stay in the shade. Avoid sunscreen on the area until it has healed, as Cleveland Clinic advises. Then come back for the beach another time.
A quick planner
| Planned activity | Before or after? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Beach and islands | Before | Sun and water immersion |
| Rafting, canyoning, river trips | Before | Natural water |
| Hot springs | Before | Hot water immersion |
| Multi-day trek with backpack | Before | Sweat and friction |
| Carnival or festivals | Before | Sun, sweat, crowds |
| Museums, food, coffee, city walking | After is fine | Low exposure, in loose clothing |

Common questions
How long after a tattoo can I swim in the ocean?
Mayo Clinic says to stay out of natural bodies of water while the tattoo heals, and that most take about two weeks. Cleveland Clinic advises avoiding immersion until fully healed. Use the cautious end if your tattoo is large.
Can I fly right after getting a tattoo?
We found no specific rule in the medical sources we reviewed. Leave at least a day between session and flight, wear loose clothing and ask your artist how to dress it for travel.
