The one with a catch

Tattoo in Cartagena, Colombia

Cartagena is one of the most visited cities in Colombia and one of the trickiest places to get tattooed. The problem is not the studios. It is everything you came to do afterwards.

How to plan it

  • If your trip includes Cartagena, the Rosario Islands or Barú, do the beach first. Mayo Clinic says to stay out of pools and natural bodies of water while a tattoo heals and to keep it out of the sun.
  • If you are getting tattooed in Cartagena anyway, book the session for your final days, choose a spot clothing can cover, and accept that swimming is over for this trip.
  • Cruise passengers usually have only hours ashore. That leaves no margin for a follow-up visit, so a port-day tattoo is hard to recommend.

Beach or hot springs on your route? Check how long to wait before swimming.

What to check first

Ask for the studio’s current sanitary concept, healed photos of the artist’s work, sealed needles opened in front of you, and a written quote. Full checklist in our guide.

Safety notes

Cartagena is not on the UK government’s advise-against list. Its general warnings about drink spiking, scopolamine and dating apps still apply along the Caribbean coast.

Common questions

Can I swim in the sea after a tattoo in Cartagena?

Not until it has healed. Mayo Clinic says most tattoos take about two weeks to heal and advises avoiding natural bodies of water until then. Cleveland Clinic advises no immersion until fully healed.
