Tattoo in Medellín

Medellín is Colombia’s second-busiest international gateway and an easy base for a tattoo: mild weather, no beach pulling you into the water, and plenty of reasons to stay a few days after your session.

How to plan it

  • Make it your last long stop. A fresh tattoo fits a city break far better than a beach week, so visit the coast first and fly into Medellín afterwards.
  • The international airport is in Rionegro, outside the city. Do not book a session on the day you land or the day you fly out of a tight connection.
  • Medellín has a wide range of rates. One booking service reports day rates from about $200 up to $1,000+ USD, so compare portfolios of healed work before you compare prices.

What to check first

Ask for the studio’s current sanitary concept, healed photos of the artist’s work, sealed needles opened in front of you, and a written quote. Full checklist in our guide.

Safety notes

The UK government lists Medellín among the major cities with street crime and warns that criminals use dating apps to lure foreign travelers. Only the Urabá and Bajo Cauca regions of Antioquia are on its advise-against list, and Medellín is not. Hygiene matters here too: in 2026, a 26-year-old died after a large tattoo at the Expotatuaje event, and the city’s health secretary said preliminary information pointed to a possible infection. The exact cause was still under investigation in the report we read.

Common questions

How long should I stay in Medellín for a tattoo?

Allow at least one full day beyond your session so you can return to the studio if something needs attention. Large projects may need several sessions, and your artist should set that schedule in the written quote.

Can I walk in?

Some studios accept walk-ins, but in-demand artists are usually booked ahead. If a specific artist matters to you, plan the appointment before you book flights.

What are the best tattoo shops in Medellín?

It depends on your style, and no public data ranks shops objectively. Start with artists whose healed work matches what you want, and check their hygiene and written quote using the checklist in our guide.

How much is a tattoo in Medellín?

It varies by artist, size and style. Published figures run from a few hundred thousand pesos for smaller work to over $1,000 USD a day for top artists. Ask for a written quote.
